Wessex makes no bones about this brick of tobacco. The description reads: “An uncut plug of rich old-fashioned Virginia to slice and rub out.” It has a bit of strength to it, as might be expected, and offers a darker flavor profile than some other Virginia flakes and blends. Expect a more subdued sweetness, and an earthier set of aromas.

I recently tried the gold brick and was enormously pleased. This was my first plug tobacco and I did not know what to expect — I even had to look up how to properly slice out flakes.
I’m still getting the hang of that bit, but have enjoyed four or five bowls so far of the gold brick and would definitely recommend it. As with their Campaign series, Wessex definitely seems to know how to craft a fine smoke.
The gold brick’s smoke is richer and less sweet on the palate than most Virginia blends; however, this ends up being a good thing. The flavor is rich, bold and smokey as one might expect of a mild English blend, but with just that hint of Virginia sweetness to mellow it out and keep you puffing.
Despite being freshly rubbed from a dense, moist plug, I did not get much excess moisture from this in my smoke; if you leave the freshly-rubbed ribbons to dry a few minutes I doubt you’ll have much trouble at all.
And the room note; oh the room note! The aroma of this smoke is as rich, bold — yet pleasing! — as the flavor promises. More so! I set myself to coughing and sneezing fits trying to smell my own smoke! This blend is right up there with the Campaign series in its ability to add a sweet yet masculine character to the atmosphere of a room.
Definitely give it a try; I’m already on the waiting list for my next batch!
