Golden Sliced is a blend of none other than golden, fully ripened Virginia leaves from the traditional districts of the United States, with just a touch of Perique. This truly golden tobacco gets its natural sweetness from the high sugar content of golden Virginias and is balanced out with mild hints of hay and citrus fruits.

All of us who have reviewed this fine tobacco must be sitting on the same porch! I agree with each review, and I must add my own advice. Use a large bowl for this. It will save you time making up a second bowl! The tin smells how it tastes, and that is a major plus! The larger tin is best for immediate use, buy the smaller ones to cellar, a perfect way to “small batch” your aged tins!

This…this may well replace Wessex Campaign as my yardstick for measuring favorites; to be sure, it certainly has become the one I’ll likely buy the most.

The tin note is, as described by previous reviews, of rich and earthy hay thick with the figgy sweetness typical of golden Virginias. As with so many of this sort, it arouses the senses almost to the point of wanting to eat it! I was a bit disappointed that, as with Wessex Campaign, the “flake” descriptor is a bit misleading here. These are not nice, neat flakes cut cleanly from a perfect blocky plug. Instead, the tin is filled with one continuous belt which is largely fraying into loose broken flakes; I worry quite a bit this will not age nearly so well as true flakes or curly cuts. Definitely a top score for the tin note, but I’d have to give it a knock on the convenience and ageability notes for not being a true flake.

First light immediately fills the air with a sweet smoke rich with the smell of oranges (or perhaps bergamots? Earl Gray Tea, anyone?) and a slight hint of something nutty or chocolaty (I’m afraid my nose is not quite so discerning as I’d like it to be!). This delightful smell continues all the way down the bowl, giving this blend a top score for room note from me!

The flavor on the tongue conveys the same promise of sweet citrus fruits as the room note; delightfully sweet and tangy. Puffing brings the sweetness up into a rich smokiness but the citrus tang remains whatever your preferred taste. I give this one a top score for flavor, as well.

All in all, Orlik Golden Sliced is a true delight and — I’ll just go right out and admit it — my new favorite. As with Wessex Campaign, I find the “shredded belt advertised as flake” a bit irritating; however, Orlik’s significantly better bang-for-your-buck value puts it a note above, in my opinion. Where Campaign is a five star blend whose packaging knocks it down a notch, Orlik is neck and neck on both counts but at an unbeatable price.

It’s a really pleasing experience — just know that the hay tin note when you first pop the lid is a precursor to the fine, citrus-y sweet smoke you’ll have when you first light this up. I honestly got tongue bite, but not because the blend is particuarly harsh — it’s because I smoked it too hard, trying to get more of that delicious flavor!

A great Virginia blend. This is the only blend I have tasted where the orange is in the foreground of the palate. You get the lovely grass and hay notes in there as well as the sugary sweetness typical of Virginias. It’s also one of the cheapest high-quality brands out there for those of you on a budget. Compare it to Dunhill Flake (that’s a big compliment comparing it).

I’ve not been a pipe smoker for long, but I’ve tried quite a few blends in the short time I’ve taken up the hobby – including trying expensive tobaccos from Davidoff, Dunhill and the like, right down to cheap-as-chips tobacco bought from the street in India.

In my opinion, Orlik’s Golden Sliced is, pound for pound, one of the finest tobaccos you can buy. There’s a natural sweetness to it, a lovely grassy tone and never once have I experienced any sort of bite from it. It can be a little wet, so air-drying it for 20 minutes or so before smoking won’t hurt.

I like it so much I’ve dedicated an Erik Nording pipe I own solely to this blend. Honestly, if you’ve never given this a go, get some today.
