The original Frog Morton is an exceptionally dark, rich, and full Latakia mixture designed for those who desire a really satisfying Latakia flavor, but want a pipe tobacco soft enough to smoke anytime. It took McClelland four years to perfect this blend, designed for smoking in quiet serenity, and also inspired them to create an entire series of outstanding blends. We owe a big thank you to Frog Morton for that.

If you’re more accustomed — or preferential — to the more aromatic, sweet-smelling tobaccos of Cavendish, Virginia or Burley note then enter into this one with caution; this English-style Latakia mixture is rich, dark and smoky with little if any of the sweetness one expects of more American-style blends.

This was my first blend in which Latakia served as the primary flavor. I was myself more accustomed to lighter, sweeter aromatics and was initially taken aback by Frog Morton’s heavy, smoky scent on opening the tin.

Being the adventurous sort, however, I forged ahead with packing a bowl and giving this new flavor a chance. I am glad I did.

The only possible descriptor I can give to this blend’s flavor and aroma is that is like carrying the great hall of a castle in one’s mouth! Every puff felt as if I were the great lord or knight of some grand old castle sitting at the head of the master table by a hearth loaded with burning hardwoods, a fine mead or even a cognac before me next to a trencher filled with brothy roasted beef. The scent of each wisp only added to this sensation and the aftertaste stayed true throughout the day.

This is truly a grand blend, giving one a feeling of luxury and class befitting of the aristocracy — at a price and availability more attuned to we the everyman. McClelland has done it again!

The original Froggie is a mild to medium powered English blend. I like how the latakia melds with other components of the blend without being overpowering. The whole FM series is great for getting an idea for what different styles of tobacco offer.
