McClelland’s Deep Hollow is another salute to the works of Tolkien, this time named for the Shire village on the banks of the Brandywine. A ready-rubbed blend of flue cured Virginia tobaccos, and nothing more. The flue curing enhances the naturally sugars of the Virginia leaf, lending to Deep Hollow a sweet taste, mild and agreeable in character.

Deep Hollow was my initiation into the world of McClelland’s “Hobbit”-inspired blends. Warm, sweet and pleasant, this was my favorite smoke until I got about to trying Wessex Campaign.
Prior to Deep, my pipe smoke has been the bulk blends at my tobacconist supplemented by drug store cheap-os when I can’t make it out there. This holds up very well against the custom blends my tobacconist peddles and is leaps and bounds over the drug store crap like Captain Black and Premium Pipe Tobacco.
Deep Hollow is much sweeter and aromatic than the original Froggie and, in my opinion, a better gateway to McClelland’s work.

This is one of the first pipe tobaccos I picked up, mostly because I thought the art on the tin was cool. This is a nice Virginia if you are new and want to see what a Virginia is all about. Smells fruity and a bit leathery too. A sweet and smooth smoke with just a hint of vanilla in the background.
