Decant: Upon opening the tin you are immediately welcomed by a sweet pungent aroma. As the name states, just like English plum cake. You have to resist the initial urge just to take a bite

Packaging: Classic tinned tobacco pleated parchment with a card stock cover. Expected, classic and proper. Large 100 gram tin.

Texture: Medium cut ribbon. Light, thin, without stems etc. Not remarkable other than the through and through consistent quality.

Prepping the First bowl: A little moist out of the tin, not unexpected so I placed a bowl amount off to the side to dry for about 5 minutes or so. I packed the bowl a bit on the loose side in anticipation of a little residual moisture. It packed well and neat.

First bowl: I lit the bowl for the char. It expanded a bit but surprisingly not a lot. Wow, what a wonderful flavor for a first light. Figs and hay jump out to caress your tongue. Thick languid ribbons of smoke were the reward for the second and only relight of the bowl. It smoked extremely well from the second light to the bottom of the bowl. Nice fine light ash that was almost too fine after subsequent tamps.

Nose and Notes: Figs and plums work their way through the entire smoke. The aroma is not as nice as the taste but it is pleasant with a hint of very ripe plums reminiscent of fresh prunes lightly in the background. The Virginians are not forgotten, they lend a sweetness that is balanced out by the ubiquitous rum note that sits in the background of the entire experience. The rum note is not unexpected or unwelcome by Navy blend fans such as myself.

Through the rest: I decanted the entire tin all at once into a mason jar as is my custom. Let it sit and marinate for a couple of days. I was rewarded with an even more enjoyable smoke. Each and every note was enhanced and improved by doing this. It even seemed the moisture evened out a bit. Definitely one of my go to blends now.

Thoughts: This is good right out of the tin. It is better after decanting to a larger airtight container. It is awesome that you get twice as much of this wonderful tobacco for what you would spend for an inferior blend. Buy multiples of this one and cellar it I would venture a guess that in 5, 10 and twenty years from now a cellared tin of this will easily be a truly exceptional experience.

Rating: Definitely 5 stars! Quality, cut, nose, flavor, aroma and what a value!! I have a few tins in reserve and will be ordering more to cellar.

Mac Baren’s best blend that I have tried. Plum and sour fruit notes in the foreground with just a touch of latakia and rum. Smells fantastic too.
