Navy Flake

4 out of 5

Navy Flake, from Mac Baren, truly deserves its place among the great flakes (no relation to the Great Lakes). It’s on the milder side, blended from the finest Burley tobaccos with added ripe Virginia’s and Cavendish. It’s flavor is deepened with the addition of honey and rum. Navy Flake is an exceptionally easy and light burning tobacco that you won’t want to put down.

Room Note

The packaging and decant aroma on this offering from MacBaren are certainly quite pleasant. I was reminded a bit of a plum cake by the smell of it.
The smoke, however, I found to be simply good. It was neither my favorite nor was it particularly unpleasant; just good. The aroma contained they smokey aroma I’ve come to associate with English-style Latakias, but was not overwhelming about it. Sadly, I felt that the sweetness I enjoy from my Virginias was also underwhelming (which surprised me given the “pleasant room note” rating this tobacco has). In short, there was nothing outstanding about the room note.
The taste was also good; smooth and mellow. Yet again, it did not quite live up to expectation, either; I went into it expecting some of the sweetness the decant aroma hinted at and found very little.
However, the tobacco was very clean burning, leaving me with very little of a dottle and only a mild gurgle even when smoked quickly using the roll or fold methods (i.e. without preparation). With proper preparation and time, this should smoke cleanly through to the bottom.
And that is where, in my mind, this blend shines; you definitely get your money’s worth. You get twice as much for the same price as you would from Wessex Campaign (my current yardstick if you’ve read any of my other reviews) or Capstan. The flakes are neat and tight and as I said they smoke clean all the way down.
All in all a pleasant but not exceptional smoke; a solid performer, if you will.

Opening this tin was shear pleasure, even the interior packaging cries out class and quality. The nose was light with hints of fruit and nuts. The flakes are the perfect size for a nice bowl. A quick rub brings it to the right consistency for loading into the pipe. Even without drying this was amazing right out of the tin. A nice balance of burleys that are exceptional. There was a sweetness and smokey nuttiness that was prevalent throughout the smoke. But not over powering. If I had to put in the description but one word it would be the German word “Gemütlich” because it is so much more than enjoyable, it is comfortable, soft, smooth, tasty and satisfying, as well as worthy of a fine whiskey or a great port to accompany it!
