Nightcap is a gargantuan blend. Fine Virginias and Orientals are married with piquant Latakia, just before a dose of fragrant Perique is added to further enhance the calming bouquet. A full-bodied blend best enjoyed when the daylight wanes, and one gets settled in for the evening. Just be careful not to doze off with your pipe in your mouth!

Decanting was reminiscent of a campfire giving way to spice. The latika is bold and out front. The spice is there almost immediately. This is a great smoke before heading off to bed. This is definitely English but very smokey English. It is strong so make sure you are sitting in a comfortable chair if you have a low tolerance. A nice scotch complements this well. I noticed a slight tartness about halfway through the bowl that gave way to nuttiness towards the end. All in all, a fine smoke, that leaves a nice fine ash and you with the thought of lighting up another bowl.

The initial tin aroma is powerful. Earthy wood smoke with notes of pine and a subtle tangy sweetness. If you like peaty scotch (think Laphroaig), Lapsang souchong tea, or heavily smoked foods, you will probably enjoy the smell. The taste is not as intense as you may expect, but packs a satisfying punch. Definitely on the stronger side, so expect a buzz. The room note is rather intense and will linger a bit more than other blends, but it’s not fair for me to deduct a star for that – just be warned. The quality of the tobacco is evident in all aspects of its enjoyment and I would recommend this to those looking for a powerful smoky blend.

Nightcap is probably in the top 5 or 10 of most popular pipe tobaccos, and people like it for a reason. To new English smokers, you may find the tin smell a little offputting. It is a strong, earthy smell. This is toned down quite a bit in the actual smoke. They don’t hold back with the Latakia in this blend, but it is very well balanced with the spiciness from the perique and the underlying flavor hints you will stumble upon. If you try this and EMP, you will have a pretty well-rounded idea of what an English blend is.

Lovely blend that’s good for any time of the day. I usually have it before bed with a cup of tea and it fits the bill. Fragrant and a little spicy. If you are new to English tobaccos I would definitely give nightcap a try.
