Capstan’s Original Flake is a mild to medium blend, and a confirmed favorite of beloved author J.R.R. Tolkien. It remains an international favorite today. Comprised simply of high-grade Virginia tobaccos, finely blended, and subtly flavored, this century-old recipe has been pleasing smoker’s for over 100 years. A “must-try”.

I can see why Capstan was Tolkien’s favorite. The flakes are neat and easy to fold & pack and the smoke is delightful.
On opening the tin, you’re rewarded with the scent of figs and hay one expects of Virginia blends. These flakes are neat and tight, so expect that delightful scent to greet you each time you return to the tin.
The packaging has a certain simple elegance to it and the tin itself is conveniently sized to the old back pocket.
The flavor of the smoke is warm and sweet, though not quite so much as Wessex Campaign (which seems to be my yardstick for the time being). Still, it easily beats out some of the other blends out there.
The room note is pleasant: sweet and mildly nutty. Again, it falls just shy of Wessex Campaign while keeping ahead of most other blends.
Yet the tie to the old Inkling will likely keep me coming back to this, at the least as a back-up to whatever ends up being MY favorite. The lure of the classic is strong with this one.
